This $2.3M Former Horse Stable in Chicago Didn’t Need Long To Lasso an Offer

Tucked into Chicago’s desirable Old Town neighborhood is a stately, 3,100-square-foot home. Its first residents? Horses.

The structure was built in 1903, but it was converted from a brick horse stable to a three-bedroom, four-bath, single-family home in 1987, notes listing agent Sharon O’Hara, of @properties East Lincoln Park.

Listed for $2.3 million, the home already has a contingent offer after only eight days on the market.

‘Next level’ renovation

The current owners bought the place in 2002 and tackled a major restoration. The original architecture features many timeless details—vaulted, 17-foot ceilings; wood-clad ceilings; and exposed brick.

“They took it to the next level,” O’Hara says of the renovations.

The living room, dining room, and kitchen were gutted; plumbing and electrical were updated; and new brick, drywall, and lighting were added.

The kitchen was also modernized with a La Cornue stove; marble countertops; and a sliding, marble backsplash just for spice storage.

The primary bath was overhauled with designer basins and fixtures, heated floors and a towel rack, plus a skylight. A wood-burning fireplace in the primary bedroom adds to the spa-inspired aesthetic, while a cedar-clad, walk-in closet rounds out the luxe space.

A coffee and beverage bar in the dining room flaunts a Sub-Zero beverage drawer, built-in ice maker, and Miele espresso machine.

Nearby, the posh living room is outfitted with a wood-burning fireplace and French doors that open to the yard.

Urban oasis

There’s an open-air kitchen in the courtyard, adjacent to a cozy fire pit.

The property’s outdoor spaces were created by landscape-design firm Hoerr Schaudt (whose clients include the Chicago Botanic Garden), and the results were featured in Better Homes & Gardens.

Buyers are often attracted to Old Town because of its commitment to preserving historical homes.

“You cannot tear down in this neighborhood,” says O’Hara, who is an Old Town resident herself. “It’s not these huge, massive homes. People buy these homes because they’re charming, close to the lake, and [the area is] neighbor-y.”

The property includes a two-car garage and an office space that could be converted back to more garage space.

“The Loop is close by,” O’Hara says, referring to the city’s iconic corridor of retailers, restaurants, and cultural attractions. “A lot of people [in Old Town] will bike into work. It is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago.”
