Gwyneth Paltrow Admits It’s ‘Weird’ How Rarely She Leaves Her House—Claiming She Has ‘PTSD’ From Paparazzi Scrutiny
Actress-turned-lifestyle-guru Gwyneth Paltrow boasts one of the world's finest property portfolios—so it makes sense that she'd want to spend as much time enjoying her homes as possible, even if her homebody ways earn her a few mocking comments from her husband, Brad Falchuk.
But lapping up the luxury of her multiple mansions is just one of the reasons that Paltrow, 53, prefers to remain behind the gates of her pricey abodes as much as she can.
The Goop founder, who is soon set to return to the big screen in the movie "Marty Supreme" in which she stars alongside Timothée Chalamet, admitted in a new interview with British Vogue that she can no longer stomach the endless public attention she receives from photographers, having spent years being chased by hoards of paparazzi.
"I have PTSD," Paltrow said of the scrutiny she faced at the height of her acting career. "Now if I’m doing a photo shoot and there’s, like, BTS video, I’m just like, ‘I’m sorry to be rude, but I can’t.’"
Speaking to the outlet from her $5.4 million home in the Hamptons, Paltrow admitted that her desire to stay inside has reach new heights in recent months, recalling a joke that her husband has about watching her location on his phone, which indicated that she had not left their house in almost a week.

"My husband was making fun of me the other day because we have this app where we can all see where everybody [in our family] is," she explained. "It was Wednesday and he was like, 'The app says you've been at home since last Thursday!'
"I was like, 'Wow, this is actually getting weird.'"
Paltrow is in the very fortunate position of having more than the average luxuries to enjoy inside her homes, from wellness-focused amenities like saunas and gyms to enormous kitchens and movie theaters, meaning she could, in theory, entertain herself happily within the confines of her dwelling for much longer than the average person.
Upon his arrival to her Hamptons dwelling, Vogue writer Giles Hattersley remarked on the incredible setup that the actress has access to, revealing: "The gate of her compound swung open to reveal several acres of grass so emerald-like, gravel so Provençal-perfect, punctuated with mature trees, its main house and scattered outbuildings achingly darling in flinty black brick, that I almost squeaked a tear.
"[Fitness trainer] Tracy Anderson had just stopped by in person as a little treat for Paltrow’s morning workout, while her stepdaughter and boyfriend are kicking around emanating the energy of late summer’s luckiest college-goers, popping to the sauna, grabbing a little snack from GP’s kitchen of dreams. Why would a person ever leave this life?"
At the time of the interview, Paltrow was preparing to jet off on vacation to another of her homes—this one in Italy—and was trying to race through her workload to ensure she could fully switch off during her trip.
Explaining that her daily routine was therefore filled with Zoom meetings and emails, she noted that she does ensure she carves out time to prioritize her mental and physical well-being, whether that's by working out with Anderson three times a week, doing reformer Pilates twice a week, or chugging a daily protein smoothie.
Add to that her sauna and cold plunge sessions, which she noted her husband is much better at bearing, and her family lunch of salad and "some sort of fish," and Paltrow is "go, go, go until dinner time," joking that the endless cycle of work made her want to "throw my f---ing computer in the Atlantic Ocean."
Which, of course, she could do directly from her waterfront Hamptons abode should she choose to.

But Paltrow also admitted that she wants to shy away from what she describes as a "strange energy in the world," explaining that she is perfectly content being at home with her husband and their children rather than on the red carpet at one glittering celebrity event or another.
"I do believe there’s a strange energy in the world right now and I like to disconnect from it as much as possible," she said.
Although she and her husband—who wed at the Hamptons dwelling in 2018—became empty nesters in 2024 when Paltrow's son, Moses, and Falchuk's son, Brody, headed off to college, the "Shakespeare in Love" star insists that the couple is also perfectly content to spend time together at home without any other company.
"I’m at peace when I’m home and I hopefully have a couple of kids rattling around, but this is also where I feel so incredibly lucky about my marriage and the kind of friendship that we have, and companionship, and kismet," she added. "Because I could just be with him in the most simple of all surroundings and be totally fulfilled and in a good place."
Of course, the couple does occasionally have to step outside of their luxurious bubble—whether that be at their home in Italy, their Hamptons mansion, or their custom Montecito estate—with Paltrow spending several weeks filming in and around New Jersey for "Marty Supreme," which will mark her first major film role since 2019's "Avengers: Endgame."
But her reluctance to engage with the outside world does make itself known even when she's in the midst of a work project. Case in point, her total ignorance about the fact that her co-star and on-screen love interest Chalamet was dating one of the world's most famous women: Kylie Jenner.
"Everyone makes fun of me because I don’t know anything," she admitted. "I was like [to Chalamet], ‘Do you have a girlfriend?’ And he was like, ‘I do.’ He mentioned that she had kids and I was like, ‘That’s so cool. I really love to hear that [from] a young man like you.’
"I understand a 45-year-old who has his own kids going out with a woman with kids, but it’s a cool choice to go out with a young woman who has two kids. I respect it. I think it’s kind of punk rock. But my point is I didn’t know [it was] Kylie Jenner…"

Today, Paltrow's primary residence is located in California, where her company, Goop, is headquartered, but she shies away from the traditional celebrity events at which she was once a mainstay.
Eschewing Hollywood and Los Angeles, the starlet set up home in Montecito, where she purchased a 2.4-acre plot of of prime ocean view land for $4.9 million in 2016, the same year she "consciously uncoupled" from her former spouse, Chris Martin.
At the time, there were two shabby homes, built in the late 1980s, on the decayed property, but she felt the investment was worth it because of the acreage itself and the views.
It took her six years and an untold fortune to create and build her idyllic dream home there, but with that time she was able to perfect every room in the solar-powered, 14,000-square-foot compound, which now features a large swimming pool, an inviting guesthouse, a greywater system, and a Goop-approved and outfitted home spa.
In an article in House & Garden, Paltrow described the feeling of the mostly single-story home as "a Parisian apartment set within an old European barn, something with high ceilings, flooded with light, a place that feels generous yet manageable at the same time.”
Details like hand-painted scenic wallpaper, a relatively neutral color palette, rich, natural materials, and a mix of textures create a relaxing, inspiring, yet classic vibe.
Not long after moving in to the sprawling abode, Paltrow sold her Brentwood mansion for $22 million, having initially put it on the market for $30 million.
Paltrow, 52, purchased the property with Martin for $9.95 million in 2012, less than two years before the duo ended their marriage.
