Ellen DeGeneres’ Former ‘Billionaires’ Beach’ Mansion Hits the Market for $35 Million—Listing for the Third Time in 18 Months

by Larissa Runkle

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres' lucrative home-flipping skills may well have earned her a fortune—but it appears that luck has not lingered in her former Carpinteria, CA, abode, which has just been put on the market for $35 million, marking the third time it has been listed in just 18 months.

DeGeneres, 67, who has since relocated to the U.K. with her wife, Portia de Rossi, 52, originally purchased the beachfront dwelling on Padaro Lane for $18.6 million in October 2017 and offloaded it at a significant profit just two years later.

The home was purchased by IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima, who paid a whopping $23 million for the elegantly renovated abode.

Kern Lima then sought to snag her own big sale of the home when she put it back on the market in April 2024 for just under $42 million, a price that it seems no buyer was willing to pay, with the listing disappearing just six months later.

The dwelling reappeared on the market at the lower price of $39.9 million in January, but again, it struggled to secure an offer. Now, it's back, listed with Robert Riskin of Village Properties, and with yet another price reduction.

Even with that latest price reduction, however, the property is still one of the priciest properties in the exclusive community of Carpinteria, where the likes of Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, and Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have all owned homes.

According to Realtor.com®, there are currently only two dwellings in the area with higher asking prices—one of which is on the market for close to $50 million.

DeGeneres' former home certainly has plenty on offer for a buyer with a penchant for the luxurious things in life.

Spread across more than 6,800 square feet of living space, the dwelling is far from the average beach home, having been outfitted with "stunning contemporary finishes" that "highlight the ever-evolving grace of the Pacific Ocean," according to the listing.

Indeed, the home's enormous glass walls serve to turn its spectacular ocean views into living works of art that also help to flood the property with stunning natural light.

Perched atop a bluff that overlooks the ocean, the home also boasts 77 feet of beachfront on a stunning coastline that has become known as "Billionaires' Beach" thanks to the extraordinary net worth of its residents.

"Expertly poised, the home's position captures an overly expansive view of the coast that spans well beyond its 77 feet of beachfront," the description continues. "An intelligent design ensures that dramatic ocean views are seen from nearly every room of the residence, all of which open to outdoor spaces."

Inside, the estate, which was built in 1979, has been extensively remodeled to include a state-of-the-art kitchen, 6.5 luxurious bathrooms, and five updated bedrooms, each with seamless transitions to decks, courtyards, and other open-air spaces.

A rooftop patio extends the experience upward, while a separate guesthouse and lighted tennis court offer additional flexibility for hosting and outdoor recreation.

"Whether on the expansive seaside deck, the private rooftop patio, or by the fireplace of a central enclosed courtyard, the ocean breeze floats throughout the home with ease," the description adds.

The home is located just a few minutes down the street from another of DeGeneres' former dwellings, a staggering bluff-top compound that she sold to billionaire Robert Friedland in August 2024.

The comedian purchased that extraordinary estate in two parts back in 2022, three years after she sold her other home to Lima Kern.

First, she and de Rossi snapped up the main property—a five-bedroom, eight-bathroom Tuscan-style mansion that sits on a 3.44-acre plot—for $41.7 million.

They then paid $28.2 million for a vacant 6.58-acre plot of land that sits alongside the home to create a jaw-dropping 10-acre estate atop a bluff overlooking the ocean.

At the time, the sale was reported to have been the most expensive real estate deal ever closed in Santa Barbara County.

Over the years, DeGeneres and de Rossi have earned themselves quite a reputation as burgeoning real estate moguls, amassing an incredibly enviable property portfolio in California and beyond. The couple have flipped and sold many of the homes for an awe-inspiring profit.

In 2011, the comedian confessed that she had quickly fallen in love with buying real estate when she began making her first real money from her on-screen career, a passion that largely stemmed from her childhood dream of one day owning a home of her own.

"We never had a house when I was growing up," she told Architectural Digest at the time. "We always rented. But my father would dream, and we used to look at houses all the time. I'd pick out which bedroom would be mine and get all excited.

"The first thing I did when I made money was buy a house. And then ..." she went on, prompting her wife to jump in and quip: "Another one. And another one and another one and another one."
