EXCLUSIVE: J.D. Vance Puts Alexandria Home on the Market for $1.7 Million—One Month After Moving Into Vice President’s Official Residence

Vice President J.D. Vance is selling his Alexandria, VA, home for $1.69 million—just one month after he and his wife moved into their official new residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Vance, 40, purchased the 100-year-old five-bedroom farmhouse for $1.64 million via an LLC in February 2023, just over one year before he was named as Donald Trump‘s running mate in the 2024 presidential election and three months after he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

However, after Trump claimed victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Vance, his wife, Usha, and their three children moved into 1 Observatory Circle, a property that has long served as the official residence of the vice president.

The couple, who wed in 2014, are thought to have used the Del Ray farmhouse as their primary residence up until Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20—but have seemingly decided that they no longer have a need for the picturesque abode, which is described in its listing as an “inviting” and “charming” dwelling.

Although the 1925 home retains much of its historic charm, it underwent a significant renovation shortly before the Vance family bought it. The update saw several modern-day amenities added to the property.

What’s more, the home comes with an accessory dwelling unit with a kitchenette, wood-burning fireplace, and full bathroom with heated flooring for maximum comfort.

The home is located “in the heart” of the Del Ray neighborhood, an upscale area that has been described as one of Alexandria’s “trendiest”—and more liberal—communities, offering residents a mix of old-world charm and bustling stores and restaurants.

“Del Ray is a vibrant community with an extraordinary restaurant scene and entertainment galore,” one online description crows. 

“There are community events every month on Mount Vernon Avenue, and trendy shops and restaurants line the street. Just North of Del Ray is the legendary Birchmere Music Hall where there is a lineup every night of up-and-coming jazz, country, R&B or folk musicians. Farmers markets and multiple wellness businesses are unique attributes of Del Ray that community members also love.”

After the election in November 2024, security around Vance’s home was increased tenfold, with Secret Service agents stationed outside the dwelling at all times.

According to local Alexandria outlet ALX, the local neighborhood park was shut down whenever Vance and his family were at the property, with concrete barriers erected around the grassy area.

Residents appeared divided over Vance’s decision to base his family in Del Ray, with one suggesting to the Washington Post that his choice to reside in such a liberal neighborhood could well be viewed as a sign that his staunch conservative views were not entirely authentic.

“He railed against the liberal elites and then he picked the wealthy liberal neighborhood outside DC to bring up his kids,” Pierce Kreutzer, a 35-year-old real estate broker and Vance’s former neighbor, told the outlet in July 2024. “He’s more aligned, truly, with people like me than he is with your typical Trump voter.”

However, Kreutzer’s wife, Caroline Barna, also 35, insisted that the Vance family’s presence in the neighborhood was not a concern to her.

“It doesn’t bother me that he lives here; he’s got to live somewhere,” she said. “His politics aren’t great. I don’t agree with him—but what are you going to do?”

In addition to the Alexandria property, Vance and his wife also own a townhouse in Washington, DC, which they purchased for $590,000 in 2014, after they graduated from Yale Law School.

It is thought that the couple lived in the three-bedroom, 1,674-square-foot dwelling while Usha was clerking for Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

However, the couple put the home up for rent in 2018 with a monthly price of $3,200, then again in 2020, this time for $3,475 a month.

They did attempt to sell the home in August 2023, before removing the listing in October of that same year. The couple are understood to have continued renting out the home, with the last known tenant occupying the property as recently as 2024.
